Triple level!!! It's hard to make three scales of Triple level!!! It's hard to make three scales of pattern readable all together but I think this works because the difference in scale is manageable and because so few different shapes are used even though it is rhythmically complex.

The top two levels utilise the same simple vocabulary of shapes but explore different rhythmic possibilities. The bottom macro level is a very simple and common 12pt star pattern.

This should ideally be viewed large and with space to move closer and further from it to really appreciate what a pattern like this is telling us, that we are not just an expression of the universe but the universe itself. As above, so below.

For now, take a zoom.

The first drawing was made with pencil, pen and pigment markers, the rest are digital. Third image is a curvilinear variation and the final image is a dual level inspired by a drawing shared by @serapekizlersonmez

The technically brilliant proportioning method he's presented has opened up a rich and fertile pattern territory.. and it's great to be studying on a course again.

More to show coming soon..

Inspired by the incredible Japanese woodwork exhib Inspired by the incredible Japanese woodwork exhibition @japanhouseldn I figured out how to make a kumiko-inspired woven lattice using the laser cutter. Photographed in today's crisp winter sun.

The mastery required to conceive and execute such refined work (and this is much simpler than most kumiko designs) just using hand tools is awe inspiring.. I highly recommend seeing this free exhibition before it closes at the end of January.

I find myself helpless to resist when new avenues of pattern exploration present themselves. I can't decide which is my favourite.
